Bra, men inte femstjärnigt!

Frukosten var mycket bra i en jättefin matsal som var ute med tak. Mycket bra bad.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The room was very nice, we had a sea view in the spa block which was quiet and a good location on the property. The room was spacious, and the bathroom was large with a nice walk in shower. The pool area was fine, we could always get a sun bed, we felt it would have been better to have more concrete areas to sit around, instead of grass, but only a minor complaint. The breakfast area was very nice, quite old fashioned looking but staff were really friendly and selection was good, apart from tea, but not many places can get it right ( I'm a bit fussy about that). We visited all the restaurants, as we had half board, including Thalassa at Elounda palace. We thought the food was excellent, apart from the Italian which wasnt so great, and staff were not particularly friendly either, compared to the other restaurants. We used the gym which was sufficient and each day we walked into Elounda for lunch which took around 20 minutes. We had a nice relaxing stay and enjoyed the hotel.

Did not meet our expectations

First, the positive - our room was spacious and had a spectacular view. We particularly enjoyed the reserved lounge chairs below our room on the platform by the water. The shower in the room was fabulous - great water pressure and very spacious. The staff was very friendly. Beautiful fresh flowers and fruit were provided in our room. And there was a lot of closet space. Now, the rest: We booked this hotel, thinking this is a luxury hotel, as it is designated as a "Leading Hotel of the World." We have had many disappointments - I will cover some of them. The beach - At this caliber hotel, we should not have had to chase down a waitress to get water. We were not offered any service for drinks or food during our time on the beach. Restaurants - The first night, we went to the Japanese/Peruvian restaurant. This might have been a pleasant meal but for the children running around the restaurant playing loudly as though it were a playground. Management should have stepped in to request that they return to their tables. On another night, we tried the Greek restaurant. The food was mediocre. We had much better Greek food in the town of Elounda. The Mediterannean restaurant was very good, and the live music with songs from the 50's, 60's and 70s was actually amusing. We were told that our room included breakfast and dinner when we booked it. It turns out that only some of the menu offerings were included and the others would cost 50% of the printed price. This would have been acceptable, except that many of the other items that were not included actually were priced LESS than the included items. It makes no sense why we were limited to only certain items and it made us feel like second-class citizens in the restaurant. (And we were not told we had an option to not include the dinners when we booked). Turn Down - We received turndown service only one of the three nights. We called to request turndown (and fresh towels), and twenty minutes later, someone came with towels. The front desk told us we had our do not disturb light on, but we absolutely did not. Complimentary bottled water is not provided in the room. Room Key - Mysteriously, in the middle of our stay, both of our key cards stopped working -- a minor incovenience, but just one more thing. We noticed things broken around the resort such as lights and sprinkler heads (there was water pooling in one area during our entire stay). A hotel of this caliber should be fixing these things. And, as many others have mentioned, the furnishings are dated. While these comments are all really minor, they are amplified by the high expectations we had choosing this hotel. If we thought we were booking a 4 star hotel (and paid accordingly), it would be a lot easier to overlook these things.

I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. The hotel was simply stunning and the accommodation First class. As part of the Leading Hotels of the World group this hotel certainly justifies its place, We were lucky enough to have experienced both a garden and waterfront bungalow on our stay and both were simply stunning. The attention to detail and high spec interiors (particularly the waterfront) were beyond our expectations, (ie electric curtains, dual control beds, in bathroom steam room!). The pool area/gardens were so spacious despite being peak season, yet still maintained a sense of privacy and serenity. Crowding is something that just doesn’t exist here! Being nestled in the bay, the views and settings of both the rooms and restaurants are breathtaking. The buffet style breakfast consisted of everything you could want for and was never busy and constantly replenished. The a’ la carte restaurants were fine dining at its best, in beautiful settings, our particular favourites being The Blue Lagoon & Thalassa at the Elounda Bay hotel. A golf style buggy can run you between the 2 properties or it is a pleasant 5-10 min stroll. We tried to experience all the restaurants and were not disappointed in any, even the Aretoussa restaurant at the Bay hotel offered a good quality and variety of dishes for a more relaxed style buffet restaurant. The Chenot Spa is not surprisingly a haven of bliss! With an extensive range of treatments, it isn’t cheap, but then this is a luxury spa.(We were also fortunate to be given some vouchers!) Finally and foremost the staff... from dining to concierge & front desk, these are the hotels real asset, friendly, professional, and with your every need at the forefront. This is a first class, luxury hotel I would recommend in a heart beat and hope to return to in the future.
