Panoramautsikt!

Mixed feelings

We chose Corfu and a self-catering apartment with pool to get away from the usual all inclusive hotel resort style, because of COVID restrictions and wanting peace of mind and less stress as possible. We were pleasantly surprised by Barbati - a beautiful little coastal village, green with olive groves and fig trees. The best weather we could have asked for - hot but not humid and with a welcome breeze. Truly the perfect spot for a relaxing holiday. However, we were very disappointed at first. We chose a 1 bedroom maisonette with pool but it was not what we expected (compared to pictures and price). It was tired looking and the pool pump was so loud that one could not relax by the pool or anywhere outside in the garden. The WiFi was weak and only worked in the living room downstairs. The garden was untidy. After the second day the WiFi stopped working and eventually the electricity went down - just before the weekend. Long story short - we were upgraded to Villa Blue 2. Most probably the best villa in the resort. The rest of the holiday, needless to say, was blissful and simply excellent. The type of apartment definitely made a huge difference. Villa Blue 2 is pure luxury with stunning views, all the amenities to be expected and a beautiful infinity pool overlooking the ocean. Worth the price too. Thank you to La Riviera for turning our stay from flop to top!!

Simply the best

We booked to stay here for 3 weeks from the 16th August till the 6th September. Can quickly sum it all up in one word - brilliant. The longer version follows. Our stay was on a self catering basis, in a  duplex apartment. The accommodation consisted of a ground floor with a kitchenette, dining area, seating area and a toilet. There was also a balcony, with a table and chairs. The upstairs had a double bedroom with access to another smaller balcony and the bathroom. The views from both balconies were stunning we could see across the Bay to Corfu Town and the Fortress's, mainland Greece and Albania. The kitchen was equipped for every eventuality with every piece of kit required, microwave, electric cooker & hob, toaster, egg cups, lemon squeezer, pots & pans, every utensil imaginable and more. Due to COVID restrictions and regulations things operated rather differently. Towels, including beach towels, were changed by placing at the used ones in a plastic sack and leaving on the doorstep, between 10.00 and 10.30. The cleaners known as "The Ladies" were a friendly bunch, always with a big wave and a smile when they saw us. They were only allowed to enter the accommodation following a request to the Office, to change the bedding and clean the accommodation, certain rules applied. The "other" Ladies that worked in the office, including the boss , Angeliki, were delightful and so helpful. The accommodation was part of a large complex, with private roads, at the foot of the mountain, so there were some steep hills about. In the area there were a number of good tavernas, coffee shops, bakeries, supermarkets and a late night bar, all within walking distance. Barbati Beach was no more than 200 metres away where there were a number of bars and tavernas. There were bus stops, nearby, for busses into Corfu Town, €2.20 each way, and in the opposite direction. Have stayed in many types of self-catering accommodation over the years, but this certainly topped the lot.

Very Disappointing

We spent two weeks at La Riviera (LRBSA) and before booking we had the choice of a private villa with pool (including car hire) or a 4 star all-inclusive hotel or LRBSA. Given the prices were the same, we were expecting something very special from LRBSA especially given its description as 'newly built 4 **** seaside residences situated within an olive grove on the emerald beach of Barbati... Apartments overlook the graceful Corfiot coastline from the large covered terraces and gardens that stretch right to the beach'. We chose LRBSA on the basis that it promised to offer the best of all worlds, the privacy of a 'luxurious' and 'spacious' apartment with direct access to the beach but with tavernas nearby if we didn't fancy cooking. We even upgraded to a larger apartment as a treat (given we hadn't been away due to COVID for so long). You can imagine then how disappointed we were when we were shown to a small, tired looking apartment that reminded us of caravan holidays from our childhoods - a small lounge/diner/kitchenette and two fair sized bedrooms although in the master bedroom you couldn’t open the wardrobe door due to the bedside cabinet blocking it. The bed was however large and very comfortable. The kitchen had a large fridge, full-sized cooker and hob, microwave and washing machine along with a range of utensils and pans but, it was so small that there was nowhere to store food or to prepare it - if you wanted to boil an egg or put a pizza in the oven then it would have been fine. The bathroom had a shower over a small bath with shower curtain. The balcony was large with a table and seating for four but overlooked the street and the backs of the seafront buildings. To be honest, the view looked like a housing estate with some nice olive trees. We have to say that this was one of the quietest resorts we have ever stayed in. During the day the silence was often punctuated by screaming children (about 90% of residents seem to be families with small children) but during the evening it was incredibly peaceful. We were a little alarmed when we realised that the resort allows large same sex groups (we saw five young women occupying a two bedroom apartment) but it seemed that only one villa higher up in the resort had become ‘party/stag/hen house’. The WiFi was patchy (non-existent on some days and kept dropping out on others) but fortunately we were able to do everything we needed to as regards COVID tests, PLFs, etc. There is no cleaning available on stays of one week at the moment due to COVID rules but if you are staying longer then you can ask a day in advance for your accommodation to be cleaned but you have to leave it vacant for 4 hours. All the staff at the resort were very pleasant and helpful. Despite the apartment not living up to expectations, we enjoyed our stay, largely due to the fact that we were about 100 yards from the beach (which is lovely but blighted somewhat by motorised boats and thumping base beats from Bahia Mare Taverna towards the end of the beach) and 500 yards from some lovely tavernas up the steep but short slope behind LRBSA. Overall, we loved Barbati as a resort (no nightlife other than a couple of bars and some restaurants all of which seemed to close by midnight) but wouldn’t stay at LRBSA again. You may wonder why this review rates it so much lower than others but as we now realise, the best reviews are from those who stayed in the better apartments or villas (i.e. those with private pools). If you book a ‘standard’ apartment (with TUI UK) then I’m afraid you will feel like a second-class citizen, relegated to the cheap seats but unfortunately, not for a cheap enough price.

Awesome holiday, worth every penny

Trying to keep this short. We had an amazing time here. We stayed in the Blue 3 Villa with private pool. We arrived quite late and were exhausted from the trip. The ladies of the reception received the entire group but couldn’t process them all at once so some people had to wait quite some time before they were shown to their apartment. The ladies were very friendly and welcoming and are very flexible with regards to customer wishes. The villa was brand new (or so we were told) and looked amazing and clean. The airco was amazing (1 in every bedroom and 1 in the kitchen/living). The pool was great as well and we loved the little garden with plants. And of course the amazing view we had every day over the sea. We also loved the stray cats but can imagine that not everyone likes this. One was pregnant (and we hope she’s doing well). The kitchen had everything we needed although we didn’t cook a lot (because the prices in restaurants are quite low). Beds are comfy with plenty of pillows to choose from and the rooms can be darkened completely. Only downside in that regard is the emergency-exit-light over the front door which can’t be turned off. If you sleep on the couch this can really be a problem. The bathroom was a bit outdated. The tap was loose. The shower was very nice though. WiFi was good, speed-wise. Streaming was possible with a few hickups. Sometimes you get asked to enter the codes again which can be annoying. WiFi reception at the pool was not good so only within the villa you have a good signal. Exception is the common pool and beach. If it is not too busy there, you can also have a decent internet connection. The village Barbati was actually perfect for us. It is quite close to Ipsos which has more to offer for youngsters. Barbati is more quiet and offered us everything we needed (although the supermarket was small and expensive). That is what surprised me most upon entering the site. How close everything is. The beach, the pool, the breakfast, the supermarket and the restaurants. From the villa you have to climb 4 stairs and then you are on the main street with the supermarket, bakery, tourist shops and the restaurants. I think there are 5 of them. (La Piazza, Caryatides, Lord Byron (our favorite), Dionysos and Starlight). The prices are more or less the same. With 4 people we ate here often for about €60-70 (in most restaurants you order 1-2 starters for the entire table, main courses, drinks and dessert). Tip: if you reserve by telephone in advance, you get the best seats. Downside of these restaurants is the wasps. Usually 1-3 per table. Some restaurants have bowls with burning coffee on the table to get rid of them but we’ve had mixed success with that. The breakfast was small but OK. Not sure if we would opt for that again should we return. A lot of things are the same everyday (fruit bowl, cereal, bread) and some thing vary, like cookies, cake (loved the orange honey cake) and eggs. Also here the wasps can be quite annoying. They have a Douwe Egberts coffee machine but you can also get coffee from the bar. Unfortunately that coffee wasn’t much better than the DE coffee so not really worth the extra €2,50 for us. We did not like the common pool that much. It was too warm to be refreshing and was the same depth on all sides. The beach was nice, but also very warm because of the rocks. The sea was a bit more refreshing than the pool and quite calm. The color was amazing. You can snorkel but don’t expect too much. You pay €4 per bed on the beach (next to the pool are free). Service is quite slow because it’s basically 1 guy running around. Took us 1 hour to get the cocktail menu and eventually the cocktails. Which were very good by the way. The beach is public and quite popular. It was hard to get a couple of beds around 12:00. And because of this you will see some towels being put on beds around breakfast. Don’t be like that. Although Barbati is awesome with regards to quietness, it is also quite far from all the tourist stuff so a car is definitely recommended. My advice would be to go for a small a car as possible because on some places that really is better (for instance parking at Kanopi beach or the many small streets in the many small villages). At the reception you can get the remote for the gate to a private parking spot. Hope this helps anyone. If you ever go back to Corfu we would most definitely come back to Barbati in probably the exact same villa.
