One star for the lobby’s potential to be a movie set

If you enjoy the feeling of being catfished by a building, this is the place for you. Walking into the lobby is like stepping into a billionaire’s mountain retreat—grand, soaring ceilings, and a massive fireplace that serves as a monument to broken promises, because it was never actually lit. It’s clear the owners spent 99% of the budget on the first 50 feet of the building and then finished the rest with a £50 gift card to a thrift store and a "can-do" attitude. The Room: Where Dreams (and Plumbing) Go to Die The rooms are spacious, which is great, because it gives you plenty of room to pace around while wondering where it all went wrong. * The 1970s Kitchenette: It’s a vintage masterpiece. And by that, I mean the hob is permanently disabled and there isn't a single plate in sight. It’s a kitchen in the same way a cardboard box is a spaceship—it requires a lot of imagination and provides zero actual utility. * The Landlord Special: Every piece of furniture looks like it was rescued from a curb and given a thick, sticky coat of white paint to hide the despair. * The "Sensory" Experience: Our toilet leaked, ensuring the room had the distinct, lingering bouquet of a sewer at 3 AM. * The Wardrobe of Narnia: We had a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe that contained... absolutely nothing. No shelves, no hangers. Just a giant wooden void. When we asked for hangers, we were granted exactly two. Apparently, the hotel is currently facing a global hanger famine. The Great Towel Heist This was the highlight of the trip. We booked for four, but only two of us checked in. Within minutes, housekeeping knocked, confirmed there were only two of us, and then marched in like a SWAT team to confiscate the "surplus" towels, shower gel, and slippers. They muttered "sorry, sorry, sorry" while stripping the room of amenities we had literally paid for. Reception later claimed they did this "so the items wouldn't be in our way." Ah, yes. Thank you for protecting me from the physical burden of an extra bottle of shampoo. I feel so much lighter now. Technical Difficulties Don't bother bringing a phone charger unless you have a 20-foot cable. There are no sockets near the beds. If you want to use your phone in bed, you’d better be prepared to sit on the floor in the far corner next to the "kitchenette" like a grounded teenager. Summary: This hotel is a hollowed-out shell of 1970s "tat" where the soul has been surgically removed. It’s grim, it’s tasteless, and it’s the only place I’ve ever stayed where the staff actively steals the soap back.
Lovely gem of a hotel

We stayed at the hotel from Valentine’s Day for a week during the school holidays for a skiing trip and was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is fairly centrally located in terms of location to the main Gondola for skiing and close to restaurants, bars and supermarkets. Upon check in we were given room 501 on the top floor in the corner which was a very larger corner room with 3 single beds. The room had a small dining table with chairs, and small kitchenette, although the hob is disconnected, there is also a sink and fridge. We did use the fridge for storage for some groceries. We had previously read reviews about being wrongfully charged for the minibar but this was not the case for us, we left a note for the cleaner to say we were not taking items but using the fridge for storage. The room also had a large wet room with skylight with a view of the mountains. The bathroom also had a couple of amenities such as shampoo, shower gel, hand soap and shower cap. The room was incredibly clean and well maintained by Svetlana. Each day we received fresh robes for the spa and cleaning was done to a very high standard. We were on a half board basis so ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel. I honestly cannot fault the food what so ever. I am incredibly well travelled and this has got to be one of the best quality buffets I have come across. The food was hot, flavourful and a great selection each day. My daughter always found something to eat and noted themed nights every few nights, including a lovely Valentines spread, Bulgarian night and Italian night. Breakfast had your full English with a little twist. Everything was fresh and the chefs were on top of the buffet making sure everything was replenished swiftly. There was an abundance of meat and my husband was in his absolute element, he even tried shark! Coffee/tea and juice is included at breakfast and there is a water dispenser for drinks evening meals. We sat around the fire and bar area which was nice. The drinks are reasonably priced, particularly for a hotel, with a wide selection. The spa was lovely and very well needed after a days skiing. The spa is clean and well maintained with lots of saunas to choose from, hot tile beds, hot tub, Roman bath and pool. We used this daily. It was also very handy that my daughter aged 11 was able to use the spa also which meant we could enjoy it as a family. There are also plenty of loungers around the pool to relax on. We didn’t have any treatments but there was a lot on offer for those that may want one. There is also a small games room for the children which was in full use whilst we were there due to the holidays. These were chargeable arcade games. The day before we left we were given a note under our door to confirm our check out time. We initially wondered what this was however found out upon checking out that this was because if you leave before breakfast they prepare a little breakfast bag for you. This was a lovely touch as we didn’t expect this which included a baguette, bottle of water, cake bar and a piece of fruit, for each of us. Overall I honestly cannot fault the hotel. Would I return, absolutely if I return to Bansko. My only criticism would be the need for a drying room/drying facilities. Our ski wear got incredibly wet on several occasions and we needed to dry this for the following day. We had to use the radiators in the room however had lots of clothes to dry. A drying room or alternatively drying racks in rooms would be a great help to those going in the winter! Also a note to those who are staying for the purpose of skiing- no ski boots are allowed in the hotel. We were not aware of this before we hired our equipment. It is far easier to store your equipment at the shop you hire from rather than walking it back and changing your boots outside of the hotel. Overall we had a lovely time and would highly recommend this hotel!
