Både ros och ris

Incheckningen var en positiv upplevelse. Hjälp med bagage till rummet var uppskattat. Veckan i övrigt var ok. Undvik rum i närheten av den dagliga livemusiken om ni vill lägga er tidigt någon kväll!! Mycket aktiviteter att deltaga i om man så önskar. Frukostbuffén var lite dåligt varierad från dag till dag. Utcheckningen var ett antiklimax. Ingen hjälp med bagage. Förmodligen hade damen i receptionen vaknat på fel sida. Det är ju alltid trevligt med ett "välkommen åter" men det uteblev.

Good room and staff were pleasant, BUT as many other reviews have stated, the breakfast and the indoor pool are a disappointment. We mostly had early breakfast, thinking it would be fresh or hot, but not the case. Bread & croissants were mostly dry where they had been there so long, and whilst the plates were warm, the cooked food was not.. especially the fried eggs, which were placed under a heat lamp that was not working all week (despite me alerting staff to this on day 2) . The Indoor pool was supposed to be heated, but it just wasn't. I was so cold in there after trying to warm up, but had to get out after just 2 lengths as the cold water was unbearable. This again I had mentioned to staff on day 2, but nothing had changed by the time we checked out. Breakfast and swimming are very important to me when chosing a holiday, so for these reasons, my holiday was spolied at the Dom Joao.

BEWARE of this hotel's advertising

BEWARE !! This hotel is fraudulent in the way it advertises it's rooms. We booked, a DELUXE SEA VIEW room for a 5 night stay, 3 months in advance. Upon checking in we were asked for our 'Booking Confirmation' voucher as we had booked and pre-paid through Agoda. The voucher clearly indicated "Deluxe Sea View" The Front Desk Clerk left and returned with the Front Desk Manager who informed us that Agoda's Portuguese agent had called the day before to reconfirm our reservation and said we booked a "Lateral Sea View" which was incorrect. The hotel staff were not willing to change this. I showed them our booking confirmation and a reply to an e-mail I had sent to Pestana reservation office confirming that we had reserved and pre-paid a Deluxe Sea View room for our stay. They then took us to view a Lateral Sea View room, with a narrow vertical window looking at a big leafy tree. Then we viewed a Deluxe Sea View room on the 2nd floor. All you could see we the roof of the shelter over the patio one floor lower. NO sea view at all. Returning to the front desk I complained that neither room was acceptable. I expected a sea view, as advertised on their web site. They said the only rooms with a sea view were the Deluxe Superior Sea View rooms. I we wanted this we would have to pay an additional charge. We finally agreed to pay the additional charge. The Front Desk staff were NOT helpful. Their attitude was that we were trying to cheat them. So before you book this hotel, either directly or through a hotel booking site, don't be fooled by the pictures associated to each room type. The ONLY Sea View rooms are the Deluxe Superior Sea View, located on floors 3; 4; 5.

Sun and shade

Great hotel right on the seafront, which meant that we could go on the beach in the morning and then enjoy the shade of the garden in the afternoon. We loved having our meals in the outside restaurant. Alvor is within walking distance.

The awful breakfast experience

Having stayed at this hotel on many occasions over the years we were both extremely disappointed this time round. Staying on a bed and breakfast basis the restaurant operation at breakfast is absolutely dreadful. Upon entering you are asked your room number and checked off a room listing,l assume to ensure you are entitled to breakfast. A smile or good morning would be nice. You then find yourself a table and proceed to choose your drinks from the machines and select your own buffet breakfast. If you want coffee or tea the queue is usually at least 10 deep as the machines only fill the mugs a quarter full and they are always having problems breaking.All guests complain about this. If you want toast the 2 toasters are antique originals that require approx 5 inserts to ensure your bread is actually toasted. The hot buffet breakfast offered is Luke warm at best. The bacon was hardly touched which is very surprising as in most hotels it usually disappears very quickly but here it was left untouched as it looked grey. The tailor made omelettes are cooked one at a time in one small pan & when joining the queue I asked for a fried egg as the egg tray was empty & was told “I don’t do them, my colleague does them” but no colleague appeared until later to fulfil my request. He then proceeded to cook them whilst looking at his mobile phone. Both these ‘cooks’ did not have a clue & it was apparent they were totally disinterested in their job. After this experience I complained to who I assumed was responsible for the running of the restaurant & informed them of my criticisms. He apologised but appeared disinterested in my complaints. I then told him he should go & visit Hotel Falesia Bay in Albufeira which is a comparable 4* hotel offered at the same price so he could ascertain how a guest should be treated & what is offered in facilities & service at breakfast. In the past we have always recommended this hotel to many friends & have always praised the wonderful breakfast & this is why we have seen the huge deterioration. The lack of investment is more than apparent in this hotel & it is clearly evident that a maitre d is desperately needed & a manager that is fully aware of what his guests expect in customer service. Hotel gardens are well looked after, rooms adequate, hygiene & cleaning good. Reception staff helpful. Location good.
