Could do better to be a real four star
For my longer break, had been looking at options in North Goa to save on drive time until South Goa. Picked Baga beach as being closer to the action, but not as crowded as Calangute. Colonia Santa Maria was rated as a 4 star property and priced reasonably for one as such. On arrival, they did check my temperature and allowed me to take the car in. The property has a narrow winding path till the end where there is an exit to the beach and a circle where you can turn the car around. Check-in was lackluster – the welcome drink was not served and you have to fill up a form with some declarations. Was shown to my room which was on the upper floor of one of the villas. Most villas have two floors with about 3 rooms per floor. If you pick a larger room, it may be just two rooms per floor. Mine came with a small sitting area and bed and a tiny balcony just wide enough to accommodate a chair. The unit below mine had a larger balcony….some of the rooms do. Overall it was clean and the door has a covering at the bottom to prevent creepy crawlies coming in though the door itself is tapered and there are gaps from which I did see a small cockroach make its way in. The beds were comfortable and the AC worked as expected as did the television with the usual assortment of channels. The biggest disappointment was the bar and restaurant. On day 1 after checkin, I hit the bar for a beer. As I was finishing it, I was provided the bill instead of being asked if I wanted another. Clearly, that was my only visit to the bar then. Breakfast was a larger disappointment. It was said to start at 730am, but on arrival, me and other guests found that there were just fruits and bread. The remaining items were brought in one after another till about 8am. The fare was quite basic for a 4 star hotel and included things like upma or idli or sevai upma, etc. One day they had parathas as the extra dish and on another it was poori chana. The only non-veg item was omlettes brought in last. There were no meat dishes which was unusual for a 4-star resort in Goa and neither were there any eggs to order or dosa counter, etc. We are told that turn down service would be done only between 0900 to 1600 and they missed my room the first day. Had to request it late evening which they entertained and then the next day it was done on time. However, the minibar items like coffee, etc were not replenished and only the water bottles were replaced. Tried room service on two nights and it was also nothing to write home about. The fried rice on the second night was strictly OK. And on the last night, I requested pork vindaloo and they said they can only serve chicken vindaloo which too was not upto Goan standards. The plate was not removed on day 2 by house cleaning and so on the third night I had to call up and request it be collected. One of the rooms below me had their food on the balcony and those plates remained out for three nights in a row. The plus point was the access to the beach which allowed one to go out and have a meal at the many shacks. From the front desk, Mr. Vithal was quite helpful and deserves a call out. However, there is really no wifi provided though there are routers in the cottages. Maybe it is only for some select plans / guests? Settlement at checkout was a pain as the machine could not connect to network even after they stood out hoping for a signal and hence had to settle in cash. In summary, the location and setup of the resort is quite good. It is clean with good ambience and two pools. If the restaurant / bar services can get their act together, this would be an ideal place to stay. If able to try and select one of the cottages closer to the beach as it is less noisy from the main gathering areas.
PLEASE AVOID
Had a horrible experience.had booked and paid 3 nights from 5th to 8th feb. bit checked out after night itself.the premium suites booked were dingy and very poorly maintained.bathroom door did not close. television set top box was not working in the second room. there was water dropping in the balcony continously whole evening and night..breakfast was below average with no live counyers. at this price of 6000 rs per room per night there were much better hotels in the area. please seriously avoid this hotel.had reported all these problems at the reception on day one itself. was happy that i checked into ADAMOS THE BELLUS nearby and slept peacefully the next 2 nights..also id u are six foot tall then u wont fit into the small beds. please avoid this place.
Decent hotel at a premium location
This is a decently good hotel right on the beach. The obvious pros is the location coupled with nice food in the hotel. We particularly liked the location as it's in between Bagha & Calangute beaches & hence it relieves one of the crowds in both. It's a 3 star lodge & not quite a 4 star, though I would rate it 3.5. I booked one of the premium rooms which has a couch as well. There were few issues were the room though like the AC wasn't working(we didn't miss is much as it wasn't that hot in the day), the TV wasn't working properly as well. There is only 1 window to open to outside & so there is no proper cross ventilation support. There is a very small balcony next to the window. The bathroom looked nice considering it's a 3 star hotel. Staff proved to be helpful & cooperating whenever required. The beach next to it is also quite enjoyable and we could stay there till 10.30 in the night. The room rates were a little on the higher side. All in all one can definitely go for it if one wishes to reside very near to the beach. Else, one may look for other options as well.
Loved it!
The location of the hotel couldn't be better, bang on the beach, and in the heart of Baga! Room was spacious. Decent breakfast. An Ayurvedic Massage spa on the premises, which my wife used twice with complete satisfaction. Two pools, although these were shut due to the current situation. Minutes walk to the beach or to the shops. The staff was extremely courteous and helpful in every way. Will surely be back soon
